Since her family is from Kansas City, Whippen has been doing BBQ her whole life. Many of her family recipes are used at her restaurants, Chicago q and Wood Chicks BBQ, including her father's BBQ rub and brine. She originally worked in the Hyatt and Hilton hotels in catering and worked towards getting her own restaurant. While she's always competed at fairs and festivals, Whippen opened her first restaurant, Wood Chicks BBQ in Chesapeake, Virginia in 2002. Her business partnership ultimately led her to Chicago where she is now the executive chef and co-owner of Chicago q. Whippen can also be seen on the show BBQ Pitmasters on the Destination channel.
